Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., remains the target of many Democrats who are irate he helped pass Republican-led legislation that avoided a government shutdown.
Liberal groups have joined in on the attacks aimed at Schumer, whom some liberals say must step down from his leadership position.
The latest leftists pressuring Schumer to fight more aggressively against President Donald Trump or resign as leader are youth groups, which include Sunrise Movement, College Democrats of America, United We Dream Action, and Voters of Tomorrow, Politico reported.
"Chuck Schumer, your leadership is failing to meet the moment," said a letter to Schumer that was shared with the outlet. "Gen Z voters want leaders with a backbone who will stand up to billionaires and fight for working people. But it's not just us. You have lost the trust of millions of voters and many of your colleagues in Congress."
The youth organizations demanded that Schumer "Obstruct the MAGA agenda with every tool you have" and "Stand beside us at protests," and they added that Democrats "will cede even more young and working-class voters" if they don't change course.
On Tuesday, two House Democrats said Schumer must relinquish his leadership position after agreeing to the GOP funding bill, which basically extended former President Joe Biden's budget for six months.
During separate town halls, Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., and Rep. Glenn Ivey, D-Md., said Schumer should resign. Ramirez nodded yes after being whether the New York Democrat should "retire or step down," Axios reported.
Ivey also called on Schumer to resign as leader, and the liberal group Indivisible agreed.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, both Democrats, criticized Schumer in recent days, with Pritzker declining to back him for minority leader.
Even former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who worked with Schumer during the Biden years, suggesting the minority leader had forfeited a crucial bargaining chip by allowing a vote on the stopgap funding bill, Politico reported.
Progressives' criticism of Schumer forced the minority leader to postpone his book tour events for this week "for security reasons," according to an announcement posted on the website of the Baltimore library where he was due to speak Monday.
Schumer said he voted to pass the legislation because a government shutdown would have given Trump, Elon Musk, and the Department of Government Efficiency more power.
