President Donald Trump on Thursday applauded what he described as unusually "fair" reporting from outlets he has long labeled "fake news," as he declared breaking news of "peace in the Middle East" during a Cabinet meeting Thursday at the White House.
"There's tremendous spirit like I haven't seen," Trump said from the Cabinet Room after announcing the pending full release of hostages and a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Trump, noting the media had covered the breakthrough "very well" and "very fairly."
"Even the news — I won't call it fake news for this purpose because they really were very fair today, I must tell you, in all cases," Trump said. "But they covered it very well. They covered it very fairly.
"Everybody loves it. Everybody. People that were never giving us a fair shake, frankly.
"They can't even believe it. They're so they're amazed by it — a lot of people are."
Trump credited the deal to what he described as unprecedented cooperation across the Middle East — including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, and Indonesia — saying it would lead to reconstruction in Gaza and "everlasting peace."
He also said he plans to travel to Egypt for a formal signing of the agreement, which he called a "momentous breakthrough" that "nobody thought was possible.”
The president's comments came after a brief lighthearted exchange about Columbus Day, as he signed a proclamation ahead of Monday's federal holiday.
