A gunman opened fire inside Constant Hall at Old Dominion University shortly before 10:49 a.m. EST Thursday, injuring two people and prompting a large police response and a campus shelter-in-place order, the university announced.
Old Dominion University police, Norfolk police, and emergency personnel responded immediately to the scene. Authorities said the gunman is now deceased, and the two injured individuals were transported to a local hospital.
Their conditions were not immediately available.
Earlier, the university issued an emergency alert reporting an active threat at Constant Hall, instructing students and staff to shelter in place and follow "run-hide-fight" safety protocols while first responders handled the situation.
Police vehicles and ambulances rushed to campus, and officers armed with rifles were seen moving toward the building as the response unfolded.
Old Dominion University later announced that classes and operations on the main campus were canceled for the remainder of the day.
Officials urged people to avoid the area around Constant Hall as emergency personnel continued their work.
