New Orleans Police on Thursday said there will be increased security presence at the Super Bowl after a man drove into a crowd on Bourbon Street on New Year's Day.
Bourbon Street will be closed to vehicles from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. "to ensure the pedestrian mall remains a safe space for everyone," officer Reese Harper said in a letter posted on X.
"In light of the tragic events on New Year's Day, we are increasing our security presence in partnership with other law enforcement agencies. The enhanced safety effort will continue daily, not just during large events.
"As major events like the Superbowl and Mardi Gras approach, we'll provide timely updates about traffic, street closures and security measures."
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. Army veteran driving a pickup truck that bore the flag of the Islamic State group, wrought carnage on New Orleans' raucous New Year's celebration, killing 15 people as he steered around a police blockade and slammed into revelers before being shot dead by police.
