Sixty percent of likely U.S. voters believe domestic terrorism is a greater threat to the United States than foreign terrorism, according to a Rasmussen Reports poll.
The survey of 1,165 likely voters, published Tuesday and conducted Sept. 16 - 18, found that 24% of likely voters think foreign terrorism is a greater threat than domestic terrorism while 16% are not sure.
The report follows the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.
Domestic terrorism activities involve "ideologically driven crimes committed by individuals in the United States that are intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or influence the policy or conduct of a government," according to legislation from the federal government.
Thomas Brzozowski, who until recently was the Justice Department's counsel for domestic terrorism, told NBC News last week that while Kirk's assassination appears to meet the definition of domestic terrorism, finding a federal charge to bring against the shooter might be challenging.
"As is always the case, the FBI needs a federal hook to initiate an investigation," Brzozowski said. "Here, it appears that they're acting in an assistance to state authorities' capacity."
