Newsmax Gains Access to Saydnaya Prison, Syria's 'Human Slaughterhouse'

Newsmax this week gained access to Syria's infamous Saydnaya jail, where prisoners of the Assad regime are rumored to be trapped underground.

The report comes nearly a month after the Syrian government fell in a stunning end to the 50-year rule of the Assad family after a sudden rebel offensive sprinted across government-held territory and entered the capital in 10 days.

Insurgents at the time announced they had entered the notorious Saydnaya military prison north of the capital and "liberated" their prisoners there.

Newsmax Middle East correspondent Zach Andreas, who reported from Syria this week, said people were still "searching for rumored underground levels and the tens of thousands of Syrians who have disappeared here."

"Inside the cells, we find the echoes of generations carved in these walls," he said in a Newsmax special report.

One woman Andreas interviewed said both her uncles have been missing for six years.

"May god not grant Bashar [Assad] success," she told Newsmax. "God willing, he will be placed with his son in his place."

The prison, reported Andreas, is "jolted by cries of 'God is great.'"

"The men digging into the center concrete column say they heard a voice cry out from down the shaft," he said.

"If silence was needed, it was never achieved. Armed rebels struggle to control the crowd, firing into the air. Those lower levels, they were never found."

One man told Newsmax, "There are voices coming from below and we need help to get them out."
