Everything seems bleak right now for many Americans; this is understandable.

Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is threatening to strip million in that country of their freedom,

Skyrocketing prices at home are eating our paychecks; our earnings are rapidly dwindling.

But these two crises cannot make us turn away from the long-term threats America faces.

President Joe Biden’s policies here at home, and his weakness abroad serve to reinforce beliefs that America’s age of prosperity and world hegemony are over.

This cannot be allowed to occur. It can't be sustained.

We can and must ensure that America’s economic and military might are unmatched. Goals mandating growth, economically speaking, and also for population growth here at home.

This must occur in ways relative to those of our adversaries.

We must recognize an indisputable fact: America is a good nation, and the world is a better place thanks to the United States.

The USA ushered a world free from fascism, while helping millions to break the free from the shackles of communism, and other despotic ideologies.

Yet, for some on the left and sadly even the right, America is "imperialist," spreading death and stealing resources.

Consequently, they say, we should retreat globally, focusing on our problems.

If enacted in policy, their misinterpretation of American history would leave the U.S. surrounded by enemies from which not even the Atlantic and Pacific oceans can protect us.

While the actions of many American leaders have resulted in terrible consequences also, there can be no moral equivalence between America and any authoritarian regime like China or Russia.

The question for us shouldn’t be whether it’s better to have a strong United States or competing global powers, but how to make sure we dominate.

Russia’s power is inherited from its past military strength and is magnified by its will for using it. China’s comes from its increasing economic and soft political power over much of the world.

Yet, both regimes have the same weakness America must exploit to our benefit: Demographics. China, a nation of 1.4 billion people, it's expected to downsize to less than 1.1 billion by the end of this century.

Russia, on the other hand, with 145 million residents, is expected to lose an additional 20 million. Low fertility and emigration of their most educated citizens will mean less tax revenue to finance their adventures abroad.

We must make sure that China and Russia lack the resources necessary to challenge America by leaning into what Ronald Reagan called one of the most important sources of America’s greatness: Immigration.

Specifically, Congress should make sure that freedom-loving Chinese and Russian citizens, and those of other authoritarian regimes globally, are welcomed to America in greater numbers — especially those possessing the most education and entrepreneurial spirit.

Not only will they contribute with their skills to the American economy, they will also deprive America’s enemies from valuable tax revenue and brainpower.

America’s population must grow not just through more immigration but also from more births and fewer deaths. The number of children per American women is at an all-time low, and many babies are killed before birth by abortion.

A growing America requires policies that reduce the cost of having large families so Americans have more children, if they want them.

The right to life from conception should be enshrined in the law and Americans should be supported to adopt more babies, both from inside and outside the country.

It’s also time for our policymakers to take our nation's mortality rate more seriously.

Over 100,000 Americans died because of traffic accidents, homicides, and suicides in 2020. These are preventable deaths. The federal government, states, and civil society must make roads safer for motorists and pedestrians, catch criminals who terrorize American communities, and help those who struggle with their mental health.

The greatest resistance of an American growth agenda will come from those who say that population growth is bad for the environment, or that immigrants represent a security and economic threat.

But as our nation's economy and population have multiplied over the last two decades, it has also reduced greenhouse gas emissions and our cities still have just a fraction of the population density of most affluent nations.

Legal immigrants create more job opportunities for native-born citizens, and rather than help their homeland’s authoritarian regimes, immigrants who leave those countries are their most ardent opponents.

The shining city on a hill will only remain free if its light shines brightly enough to illuminate the darkness surrounding it.

America must grow its population and economy to prevent and ultimately defeat the enemies seeking to destroy us.
