Thursday, U.S. senators questioned President Joe Biden’s nominee for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Dr. Saule Omarova, though we should call her Comrade Omarova.
If you haven’t heard about Omarova’s nomination yet, you better get ready. Her policy positions include supporting government takeover of private banks and the money you have deposited in them, and her personal record includes shoplifting.
If there are still moderate Democrats in this country who believe in free enterprise and not socialism, then this is the time to send a loud message for all to hear: The U.S. federal government isn’t a place for Marxists, and Omarova is one of them.
Omarova was born in what’s today Northwestern Kazakhstan, then part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). She attended college in Moscow thanks to a scholarship.
Then she came to America and became a doctor and became a lawyer and a doctor with a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin and a law degree from Northwestern.
Clearly another immigrant escaping socialism and in love with American freedom achieving her American dream, right? Not so fast.
In a law review article published just last month, Omarova argued for total nationalization of the consumer banking industry, calling for "ending banking as we know it" by "replacing all private bank deposits with central bank accounts" at the Federal Reserve. In other words, all that money you have at your local bank, credit union, Bank of America, Chase, now will be held by the U.S. federal government.
This radical action would give the government unprecedented power to implement monetary and fiscal policy, playing with your hard-earned savings, at its will.
Omarova’s idea would let the Federal Reserve restrict how much money you can take out of your bank account, implement negative interest rates to encourage consumption, and take us down the path of hyperinflation with modern monetary theory.
Much like Sen. Bernie Sanders' praise for Cuba’s "literacy" program, in March of 2019, Omarova praised the Soviet Union on Twitter: "Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there."
I doubt the veracity of her claim, but I admit it’s hard measure the gender wage gap in a country where millions of both men and women starved to death and dissenters got sent to gulags.
Her views about banks and the wage gap matter.
Biden nominated Omarova for a position titled the comptroller of the currency. This little-known position is more important than you’d think and that’s why it requires Senate confirmation.
The OCC is in charge of chartering banks, that is, authorizing new banks to open, and it also regulates and supervises all national banks and federal branches of foreign banks in the United States. In other words, Biden nominated a communist to supervise the most important economic sector of a free market economy — the financial system.
And if her socialist credentials and ideas weren’t enough, it was recently discovered that Omarova was arrested in 1995 for shoplifting over $200 of clothing items, and trying to hide them in her purse. There’s something incredibly satirical about a socialist who gets arrested for shoplifting; it shows greed and disregard for private property.
Leftists may try to frame these attacks against Omarova as xenophobia.
The truth is the opposite.
America is an exceptional country in part thanks to the contributions of immigrants who know all too well what living without freedom is like.
As an immigrant from a socialist country, I can even say Omarova’s story is similar to my own. I came from Venezuela and I’m also getting a doctorate degree, though in economics.
However, it seems as if Omarova came to America, not escaping socialism as millions of us did, but attempting to export it.
Yesterday at her Senate hearing, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., summarized Omarova’s nomination very well: "I don't know whether to call you professor or comrade."
Omarova is no different than the socialist government officials who destroyed my beloved Venezuela and her native Soviet Union. Twenty years of Soviet socialism didn’t make her despise those ideas, rather they seem to have hardened them in her consciousness.
For America’s sake, the Senate must reject her nomination. Democrats and Republicans cannot allow a Marxist to control our economy, or we will all pay the consequences.
