Although plaque naturally builds up with age, these are some ways to reduce it:

• Not smoking

• Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables

• Controlling weight, especially around the belly

• Reducing stress

• Limiting or avoiding alcohol

• Exercising regularly

• Avoiding inflammatory fats

• Increasing intake of anti-inflammatory fats, such as omega-3 oil in fish

• Regularly brushing and flossing teeth

• Avoiding exposure to fluoride

• Avoiding exposure to toxic metals, such as aluminum, cadmium, or lead

• Avoiding food additives with glutamate, such as MSG
