Marquette Poll: Trump Tops Biden, Widens Enthusiasm Margin

Not only is former President Donald Trump leading President Joe Biden by 3 points among registered voters in the latest Marquette Law School Poll released Wednesday night, Trump's lead also widens when voter enthusiasm is considered.

Trump draws a majority 51% support among registered voters to just 48% for Biden, but Trump has an 8-point lead (54%-46%) among those "very enthusiastic" and a 6-point lead (53%-47%) among those "somewhat enthusiastic," according to the poll.

Biden flips the results and leads Trump by 8 points (53%-45%) among those "not too/not at all enthusiastic" to vote, perhaps putting the age-old emphasis on voter turnout.

Trump has long argued mail-in balloting, pushed by Democrats, helped outdo the voter enthusiasm component of presidential elections, giving Biden more votes than he would have otherwise received with in-person voting during the 2020 presidential election.

Presidential campaign strategist Dick Morris noted on Newsmax that Trump trailed by wide margins in the mail-only balloting, but he had more voters with in-person and Election Day voting.

Trump also has high enthusiasm and momentum in the GOP presidential primary polling. Trump expanded his 24-point led in July to a 44-point lead in September, picking up 10 points of support, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis lost 10 points.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, conservative broadcaster Larry Elder, and former Rep. Will Hurd, R-Texas, each received less than 0.5% of the vote. Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Michigan businessman Perry Johnson did not receive a single vote. There were 15% undecided/other outside all of those aforementioned candidates.

Notably, even if DeSantis has sunk against Trump in the GOP field, he still maintains an identical majority and 3-point lead (51% to 48%) in a head-to-head hypothetical matchup against Biden.

The Marquette Law School Poll was conducted Sept. 18-25 by the SSRS Opinion Panel, surveying 868 registered voters nationwide, 690 likely voters, 381 registered GOP primary voters. The margins of error are plus or minus 4.4 percentage points, 4.9 percentage points, and 6.7 percentage points, respectively.
