NYC Mayor Adams: Gov. Hochul's Migrant Policy 'Wrong'

By    |   Tuesday, 29 August 2023 12:24 PM EDT

The battle between Democrat New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul continued Tuesday.

Adams rebuked Hochul's call for the sanctuary city to stop moving its illegal migrants out of the city to other parts of the state.

"I think the governor's wrong," Adams said Tuesday at New York Law School and the Center for New York City Law, Politico reported. "She's the governor of the state of New York. New York City is in that state. Every county in this state should be part of this."

Upstate New Yorkers have pressed Hochul to help curb the busing of illegal migrants out of the city, and she has urged New York City to keep and house their illegals instead of passing them off to other counties in the state.

Adams had called on Hochul to stop communities from blocking the transportation of migrants to their locales. And Hochul added that New York City's right to shelter mandate is limited to the city.

"This is an agreement that does not apply to the state's other 57 counties, which is one of the reasons we cannot and will not force other parts of our state to shelter migrants, nor are we going to be asking these migrants to move to other parts of the state against their will," Hochul said last week, according to Politico.

The fallout has come between sanctuary city, state, and national Democrats as Adams has been exposed to the reality that his city cannot accommodate what has become more than 100,000 illegal migrants.

"This is a real leadership moment," Adams said of Hochul. "And all those counties — we are the economic engine of this state. New York goes down, the entire state goes down."

New York has a "moral imperative" to help illegal migrants, Hochul previously said, as pointed to in response to Adams' criticisms by Hochul spokesperson Avi Small to Politico.
