Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chair of the Senate Budget Committee, is set to brief Senate Republicans on Wednesday on a budget resolution to fulfill President Donald Trump's main objectives despite House Republicans remaining in a stalemate over how to proceed.
Graham and his fellow Senate Republicans hope to pass a budget reconciliation bill that targets the border, expand domestic energy through oil and gas drilling and a large increase in defense spending. The package would not include language that would extend the 2017 tax cuts set to expire, which is expected to be included in a later budget reconciliation bill.
Senate GOP Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., told reporters that House Republicans are "not able to move at the level we'd like them to move" at the moment. "We do have a bill ready to go here and Sen. Graham is going to be briefing the conference on that tomorrow at lunch."
Barrasso said the Senate Republicans will meet with President Donald Trump later this week to "see if he'd like us to move forward" with this plan.
He also said that Graham will keep Republicans in the loop "on where he is in terms of putting together the budget for the reconciliation," He added: "What he's been working on, of course, is … the immediacy of border security, energy security, defense, national security. Those parts of things."
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said on Tuesday that House Republicans still plan to proceed with a budget package that includes a continuation of the tax cuts as well as border security, energy, and national defense initiatives.
