While some House Republicans dug in and would not support the recently passed government stopgap funding bill, Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., told Newsmax on Monday that they need to recognize there “was no alternative” and work together in the new Congress to pass President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda instead of fighting among themselves.
“We need to work as a team,” Meuser told “National Report.” “We cannot make good the enemy of perfect. I was in business for 25 years. You do that, you get nothing done. And that's a prospect that we cannot allow to occur in the next Congress.”
Meuser said there “is going to be a mutual plan and mutual execution” in the 119th Congress that is “based upon President Trump’s America First agenda” and anyone who “doesn’t get on board with that is not acting in the manner that the American people voted for.
“So, it's really that simple. We can accomplish a lot, or we can just fight and accomplish very little, which, unfortunately, Congress is traditionally known for.”
The Keystone State congressman also responded to Rep. Nancy Mace’s criticism of the continuing resolution. He called her description of the bill — Mace, R-S.C., called it a “fiscal trainwreck” in a post on X — an “overstatement.”
“It's certainly not a train wreck,” he said. “It’s a CR, of course; it's something President Trump realized we needed to do at this point in time. The appropriation bills weren't done. [Majority Leader] Chuck Schumer runs the Senate. They passed no appropriation bills. So, it's nice to say how bad it is, but there was no alternative. So, we need to do this, now we need to get our acts together.
"We're going to have the Senate majority. We're going to have the House majority. We're going to have President Donald J. Trump in the White House, and now we're going to have to prove to the American people that they were right in voting in the manner that they did.”
Meuser did acknowledge that funding for the World Trade Center Health Program for 9/11 first responders and survivors did not make it into the final version of the stopgap funding bill.
“Look, we're going to review these things more closely moving forward,” he said. “Of course, the DOGE is something that is all about transparency, about accountability, about presenting legislation to the American people so they know what it is that we're voting on and how we're spending their money," he said referencing the Department of Government Efficiency. "So, we need to do these things more carefully. When we get handed — and there's a lot of pointing fingers and blame to go around — but when we get handed a 1,500-page bill at 6:20 at night, and we have to vote on it basically the next day, there are issues with that, clearly.”
