Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., told Newsmax on Friday that House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., "will make it through" the upcoming speaker vote despite some Republicans' reservations.
"I believe he will make it through," Flood told "National Report" when asked about Johnson's chances of retaining his position.
The House meets on Friday afternoon to elect the Speaker of the House for the next session of Congress, with all Democrats planning to vote unanimously for Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., meaning Johnson can only afford to lose a single Republican vote in order to keep the post.
"I'm not predicting maybe on the first vote," Flood added. "But I'll tell you what, this is way bigger than Mike Johnson, this is about the Trump agenda. This is about the mandate that we have as the American people to get things done, and if somebody is trying to negotiate at the last minute to get a spot in a certain committee, that's out of bounds, this is about moving the country forward."
The congressman continued, "This is bigger than one person's ambition to have a committee chair, this is bigger than one individual's desire to be on a committee. And this, quite frankly, is much bigger than Mike Johnson."
Flood said that Trump's message to Congress should be: "No dysfunction on my watch, no dysfunction for America, no lapse in the start of the House of Representatives. Let's get this show on the road."
Flood noted that "maybe 200 total" Republicans in the House "say this is unacceptable, not to elect a speaker today, and it should be Mike Johnson."
