Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, the Republican nominee for the state's open U.S. Senate seat, told Newsmax on Monday that even in deep blue Maryland, voters' concerns reflect those shared by Americans nationwide.
Hogan, who served two terms as governor, is challenging Democrat Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks for a seat left open when Democrat Sen. Ben Cardin decided not to seek re-election.
"The issues that are the strongest right now, the ones that resonate in the polls, that we hear every day in Maryland, even in this very deep-blue state and the ones that there's a huge difference between my opponent and I, are affordability, the terrible economy, crime, which is running rampant in Prince George's County, where my opponent is from with murders up 100% and carjackings up 500%, and they're most concerned about securing the border and fixing our broken immigration system," Hogan told "American Agenda." "My opponent runs the largest sanctuary [county] in America, and she works very hard to release criminals that won't cooperate with ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement].
"So, there are big differences out there on a lot of issues that people care about."
Hogan, a moderate Republican on many issues, including abortion, accused Alsobrooks of trying to play into women's fears that if elected, he will take a harder stand on abortion.
"Obviously a pretty large percentage of women in Maryland are also concerned about reproductive rights," Hogan said. "That's been a big part of my opponent's campaign, who's basically been running a campaign based on lies, trying to scare women on an issue that's very important to them.
"And, you know, I'm maybe different than some Republicans in that I'm standing up for a woman's right to make those decisions for herself."
