Rep. Michael Rulli, R-Ohio, told Newsmax on Monday that Americans living in Springfield, Ohio, are in the throes of a "miserable existence" since being "overrun" by the influx of an estimated 20,000 Haitian immigrants.
Rulli was one of six Ohio lawmakers who sent a letter to the Biden administration last week pleading for federal assistance to help deal with the "significant strain" that's been heaved upon the city. Unlike New York and Chicago, among others, Springfield is not a sanctuary city.
"[T]here's been all these different, you know, sensational stories that take away from the fact … that people in Springfield are having a miserable existence right now with the flooding of these 20,000 Haitians that have overrun their city, to be honest with you," Rulli said on "Carl Higbie FRONTLINE."
In the letter spearheaded by Rep. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, the six lawmakers wrote that "The Biden-Harris Administration has created an immigration crisis in Springfield, Ohio," adding, "it is the Biden-Harris Administration's responsibility to provide assistance to the City of Springfield, its schools, healthcare centers, law enforcement, and social services agencies."
Meanwhile, citizens of Springfield are getting priced out of their own town thanks to housing subsidies provided by the Biden administration to house Haitians, Rulli said.
"And what the landlords are realizing is the reimbursement from the federal dollar is much more than they could get, actually, from the rent due from rightful people of Springfield," Rulli told Higbie. "So the people of Springfield are losing their leases in order for these landlords to get a little bit of extra money from the reimbursements of the federal government.
"It's a disgrace."
