President Joe Biden gave his farewell address last week, the last major speech of his presidency. Like most presidents, he touted his achievements and made several indirect slights against his successor. Unlike most presidents, however, his speech marked the end of not only his presidency but also his political career.
There is no standard for the role of a president post-presidency. Historically speaking, Republican presidents tend to step back from the limelight. Indeed, Presidents George W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush all eschewed the limelight once their time in office came to a close.
