WSJ Poll: Swing State Voters Say Trump Better on Foreign Policy

By    |   Saturday, 12 October 2024 03:23 PM EDT

A new survey from The Wall Street Journal shows voters in seven key swing states favor former President Donald Trump over Vice President Kamala Harris when it comes to dealing with international crises.

The Journal polled registered voters in Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin on the topic of foreign affairs, a key issues with wars in Ukraine and in the Middle East.

Regarding Russia's war in Ukraine, voters in the seven battleground states prefer Trump over Harris 50% to 39%. When asked which candidate would be better suited to handle the Israel-Hamas conflict, Trump leads 48% to 33%.

The outlet noted that Trump's lead on the issue of foreign affairs was moved to a large extent by independent voters, almost half of whom prefer Trump on Ukraine, compared to a third who prefer Harris. When it comes to the Middle East conflicts, 43% of independents prefer Trump, compared to 26% for Harris.

"When Trump was president, we didn't experience any wars," said David Lee, a Republican pollster who worked on the Journal survey with Michael Bocian, a Democrat. "With Biden-Harris there, there's definitely been more unrest in the world, and the base of the Democratic Party, as far as Israel and Hamas go, are fighting against each other."

The Wall Street Journal poll was conducted Sept. 28-Oct. 8 among 600 registered voters in each of the seven states. The margin of error for the full sample is plus/minus 1.5 percentage points and 4 percentage points for results from any one state.
