Alarm Bells Ring for Bowman as He Trails Rival by 17 Points

By    |   Wednesday, 03 April 2024 10:37 PM EDT

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., might be seeing his days as a fire alarm-pulling "Squad" member come to an end.

The far-left Bowman, who represents the 16th Congressional District of New York, trails Westchester County Executive George Latimer 52% to 35% among Democratic primary voters, according to a poll obtained by the New York Post.

The survey, conducted by Democratic pollster Mark Mellman for the pro-Latimer Democratic Majority for Israel, shows Latimer's lead expanding to 21 percentage points, 56% to 35%, when taken from Democrats who voted in at least three of the last four primaries.

When narrowed further to voters who are familiar with both candidates, which is 76% of the electorate, Latimer's lead grows to 26 points at 60% to 34%.

Bowman has received less than positive press of late due to his anti-Israel sentiment and antics. In October, he pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building, which he reportedly did in hopes of delaying a vote to avert a partial government shutdown.

"Latimer does 32 points better on the positive side, while Bowman's negatives are a massive 37 points higher than Latimer's," Mellman told the Post. "Very few unindicted elected officials receive such strongly negative ratings from their co-partisans."

Yet Bowman campaign spokesman Bill Neidhardt dismissed Mellman's numbers.

"Mark Mellman not only had incorrect polls on this race in 2020, the candidate Mellman supported had to tell him to stop airing racist ads that darkened Rep. Bowman's face," Neidhardt said. "He doesn't have an ounce of credibility here, and his junk numbers back that up."

Polling data from the Working Families Party would seem to support Bowman's position on Israel, as it found two-thirds of Democrats in the district support a cease-fire in Gaza.

Mellman, who is the president of the advocacy group Democratic Majority for Israel, has sought to replace multiple members of the "Squad" due to their anti-Israel stances. In addition to Bowman, Democrats Cori Bush of Missouri and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania are being targeted in their respective primaries.

Bowman and Latimer will find out whose polling data is accurate when the primary arrives on June 25.
