Harris Follows Vance, Pitches Increased Child Tax Credit

By    |   Friday, 16 August 2024 12:43 PM EDT

First it was no tax on tips. Now Vice President Kamala Harris is pitching another policy idea suggested by her Republicans opposition: increasing the child tax credit.

During a speech Friday in North Carolina, Democrat presidential nominee Harris was expected to propose an economic plan that includes a $6,000 child tax credit for middle- and lower-class families during the first year of a child's life, Axios reported.

A child's first year could prove costly for families who have to forfeit pay to take time off to care for newborns, the campaign said.

Five days earlier, Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, called for expanding the child tax credit to $5,000 as part of a push for a more pro-family policy.

It was reported earlier this week that Harris surprised Democrats by announcing she supports a plan first proposed by former President Donald Trump, the GOP presidential nominee, to exempt taxes on tips for services and hospitality workers.

Key Democrat lawmakers and progressives panned the proposal when Trump floated it during meetings in June with Republican lawmakers, calling it a "bogus" play for votes, and saying it is not fair to lower- and middle-income workers who don't work for tips, The Hill reported.

It's likely her tax-credit plan will be received more positively among her party members.

In his 2024-2025 fiscal year budget, President Joe Biden called on Congress to expand the child tax credit to the levels that were in place during the COVID-19.

Biden sought expanding the credit from $2,000 per child to $3,000 per child for children 6 years old and above, and to $3,600 per child for children under 6.

With the economy often rated as the No. 1 issue among voters, each major party is seeking to convince Americans it can best combat the rising inflation seen under the Biden administration.

Harris' campaign released a preview of the candidate's economic plan, which includes lowering housing and renting costs, helping states cancel medical debt, and implementing a federal ban on price gouging, Business Insider reported.

The vice president also is proposing tax cuts for working-class Americans. One measure would enhance the Earned Income Tax Credit for adults who don't have children, and another proposal purportedly would shave $700 off health insurance premiums for Americans using the Obamacare marketplace.
