Halperin to Newsmax: As George H.W. Bush Said, Debates 'Tension City'

By    |   Tuesday, 10 September 2024 09:08 PM EDT

Political analyst and bestselling author Mark Halperin told Newsmax that debate nights like tonight's, in the words of former President George H.W. Bush, are "tension city."

"I don't care if you're an incumbent president — even Donald Trump, who's been through more of these than anybody now in American history. There's something about this night. You're out there by yourself," he said during pre-debate coverage on Newsmax.

Halperin said Trump does have one advantage over his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, beyond doing this before.

"He is more impervious to pressure than almost anyone I've ever covered. Kamala Harris, on the other hand, has a history of not doing well under pressure. She's very well prepared, but she didn't have her handlers out there. She's by herself," he said.
