Morning Consult Poll: Harris Jumps to 6-Point Lead Over Trump

By    |   Tuesday, 17 September 2024 12:56 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump is down by 6 points nationally to Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a new poll released Tuesday from Morning Consult.

In the extensive survey that polled over 10,000 likely voters, 51% said they plan to vote for Harris compared to only 45% for Trump. Harris' 6-point lead represents a 3-point increase since a Morning Consult poll had her leading by 3 points before the debate.

Before last week's debate, the majority of polls showed the candidates locked in a statistical tie; yet, after the debate on ABC, which featured a rehearsed Harris versus a more free-flowing Trump, many voters now say they will support Harris in November.

"A majority of likely voters, including 1 in 5 Republicans, believe Harris won the debate, and performance appears to be crystallizing her national lead over the former president," according to pollster Eli Yokley on Axios.

Harris' numbers were a record for a Democrat presidential nominee, according to the poll.

"Her 51% of support among likely voters, which is also at a record high, is driven largely by her best figures to date among Democrats, Biden 2020 voters, liberals, women, 18- to 34-year-olds and millennials," Yokley added.

The Morning Consult poll was taken between Sept. 13 and 15 among 11,0222 likely U.S. voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.
