Stimulus Checks to Bear Trump's Name

Your name won’t be the only one on the government issued relief checks being distributed in the coming days.

In an unprecedented decision finalized late Monday, the Treasury Department ordered that President Donald Trump’s name will be printed on the stimulus checks, The Washington Post reports.

It will be the first time a president’s name appears on an IRS disbursement. Donald J. Trump will be printed on the left side of the paper check in the memo line under a line that reads “Economic Impact Payment,” administration officials told the newspaper.

Trump wanted more than his name on the checks. The newspaper reports the president wanted his signature on them. Trump had privately suggested to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who oversees the IRS, to allow the president to formally sign the checks, according to three administration officials who spoke to The Washington Post on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

But legally, the president isn’t an authorized signer for legal disbursements by the U.S. Treasury. To keep politics out of government payments, a civil servant signs checks issued by the Treasury Department. The checks will bear the signature of a Bureau of the Fiscal Service official.

Trump denied wanting to sign the checks at a briefing earlier this month, according to CNN.

Because of the decision to add Trump’s name, there have been reports that the checks may be issued later than expected as the computer code needs to be adjusted to include the new information. But Treasury Department representatives deny any delays and say the checks will be issued on schedule.

Checks are scheduled to be sent Thursday to the Bureau of the Fiscal Service for printing and issuing.

Under the stimulus plan, single filers earning up to $75,000 a year receive a payment of $1,200. Married couples earning up to $150,000 a year receive a payment of $2,400. Parents receive an additional $500 for each child under 17.

Paper checks are scheduled to go out at a rate of 5 million per week until September. If you have signed up for a direct deposit payment, you will not see Trump’s name anywhere.
