Last year rumors emerged that Cameron Diaz had retired from acting. Fans were left wondering why she had suddenly disappeared from the limelight after starring in 2014’s "Annie." Diaz has finally offered an explanation in an interview with InStyle magazine.

"The way I look at it is that I’ve given more than half of my life to the public. I feel it’s OK for me to take time for myself now to reorganize and choose how I want to come [back] into the world," she said.

Diaz was in her early 20s when she first rose to fame. Her breakthrough role came in 1994, when she appeared opposite Jim Carrey in "The Mask." Dozens of blockbuster roles ensued over the next two decades. Now Diaz said she felt it was okay to finally take time off to reorganize her life.

"I don’t miss performing," she admitted to InStyle. Her words echo those of an anonymous source who spoke to People earlier this year.

"There were times when she was so busy making movies that she barely had time to catch her breath," the source said at the time, adding that those days were over.

Diaz told InStyle that she felt fulfilled with what she had achieved in her career. Now she is enjoying being away from the public eye.

"It’s fun to just not have anybody know what I’m up to. Because my time is all mine. I’m not selling any films, and because I’m not selling anything, I don’t have to give anybody anything. I’m not doing this anymore. I’m living my life," she said.

Diaz has not completely ruled out the possibility of returning to Hollywood, but it would have to be for something meaningful.

"I like doing my own thing. I like creating, so I’m just looking for the project that makes the most sense for me now," she explained. "I have some things brewing, but it’s a little too early to talk about them."

For now, Diaz is content with just nurturing her relationships with friends and family.

"I’m grateful for every moment I have," she said. "I just want to build better, stronger friendships with the people who are in it with me."
