Drew Barrymore said she is ready to drop dating apps after connecting with a man who lied about being an NFL quarterback.
The actor, 48, opened up about her experience during a new episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show," telling co-host Ross Matthews that she was "about to get off" dating apps.
"Every time I get on there it does not feel great. I always last five days," said Barrymore about online dating, according to People. "And this time my app has changed where it shows people like you so it's very flattering ... but I don't know who anyone is, and it just feels scary to go out with a stranger."
Replying to Barrymore, Matthews pointed out that is how dating apps are meant to work.
"You're not supposed to know them. You don't go on a dating app to meet people you already know," she said.
Barrymore then recounted her recent experience.
"This guy on my dating app said he was the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams. So I wrote to him and I was like, 'Oh, my God, I went to the first practice game. I was so frustrated being a girl from Los Angeles who loves football and we didn't have any teams. And then I moved away to New York and then we got two teams. And it's nice to meet you, my name is Drew,'" she said.
"He was not the quarterback for the L.A. Rams — he's a musician that thought he was being cute. How should I feel about this?"
Said Matthews: "You should feel lied to, robbed. I had a fantasy you'd be like the new Taylor Swift and you'd be at the games."
Said Barrymore: "Well, we're also going to the Super Bowl, and I was like, 'Oh, maybe I could meet...' I wasn't trying to land a football player. I was excited to talk about that I had been at the Coliseum to see their first game in Los Angeles.
"And then the guy was like, 'Hey, Drewski,' and I was like, 'I hate you... You pithy, deceiving, playful — you've made me feel stupid. I don't know who you are. I feel so dumb. Why did we have to get off on this foot? I hate you!'"
Barrymore has been open about her experiences on dating apps, previously sharing how she was stood up by someone she had connected with.
"I went on an app — I think you've been on this app, too — where every guy was a surfer, a photographer, had a dog, and definitely their best friend's kid," Barrymore recalled in 2021 during an episode of her show featuring guest star Nikki Glaser. "I was like: 'Wow, this is like a cookie-cutter. It's like the same thing over and over and over.'"
Barrymore eventually connected with a comedy writer and they had a date arranged, but things did not go according to plan.
"I booked a date with one guy, finally, and then he stood me up at the exact time we were supposed to meet," she said. "I was like: 'Can't you be a jerk an hour before? That would have been such a time-saver.'"
Barrymore said it was not surprising as it "happens all the time."
