Paris Jackson is celebrating a milestone in her sobriety journey.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the 26-year-old singer, who is the only daughter of the late Michael Jackson, spoke candidly about her struggles with addiction, revealing she has been sober for five years.
"Hi, I'm pk and I'm an alcoholic and a heroin addict," Jackson — whose legal name is Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson — captioned the reel, which featured a montage of short video clips. "Today marks 5 years clean & sober from all drugs and alcohol. To say that I'm thankful would be a poor euphemism. Gratitude hardly scratches the surface."
She continued, "It's because I'm sober that I get to smile today. I get to make music. I get to experience the joy of loving my dogs and cat. I get to feel heartbreak in all (its) glory. I get to grieve. I get to laugh. I get to dance. I get to trust. I feel the sun on my skin and it's warm. I've found that life keeps happening regardless of whether I'm sober or not, but today I get to show up for it."
Commenting on her video, Jackson wrote: "Here's a little snapshot of what has been possible because of my sobriety, and my god I can't believe I almost missed it all. Thanks 1 • 7 • 20."
The video, which features clips filmed over the years, begins with Paris Jackson seen drinking straight from a bottle of Jameson and smoking in various settings. It then shifts focus to her life in recovery, highlighting moments of sobriety, including her dancing, making music, spending time with her dogs, and kissing her fiancé, Justin "Blue" Lon.
"To those that helped me on this journey, if only for just the beginning, middle, or the whole time so far, you know who you are and I owe you my life," she concluded her video. "Thank you. 5 years. THANK GOD."
Jackson has been vocal about her mental health struggles in the past, sharing in the 2020 Facebook Watch series "Unfiltered: Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn" that she "fell into self-harm" after her father's death.
"It was also a distraction from emotional pain and transferring it to physical pain. And a need for control," she said at the time.
Jackson also spoke of her decision to stop taking medication to treat her depression.
"I used to be on anti-depressants and mood stabilizers, but it kind of clouded my third eye and I couldn't laugh as deeply," she revealed.
"So even though the lows are unbearably low, I would still rather that than nothing," Paris continued, adding that, "Pain is way better than just [being] numb because at least you're feeling something."
