Rob Lowe is opening up about his sobriety. The actor has been clean for 30 years and in an interview with "Sunday Today," Lowe explained that he was able to get sober after committing himself fully to the decision.

"So I wanted to do it. I was done, I was ready, I did it and got into recovery," he recalled, per People. "And recovery really does work for people who work it."

During the interview, Lowe explained that he worked with adolescents struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as with their parents, and could see the impact the decision to get clean had on whether or not they overcame their struggles.

"And that's the thing I always tell them is that, unfortunately, no one can get healthy for their job or for their relationship or because of their court case, or because of Mom or Dad or a sister or brother," he said. "They can only do it when they want to do it."

Lowe got sober in 1990. He first began drinking at age 18, while filming for "The Outsiders," and his addiction only worsened over the years.

"Without even knowing it, it became just a big part of my life to the point where ... I decided that I needed to go and get help," Lowe previously told NPR.

"When I was ready, when I went to rehab, if they told me to go stand in a corner with my clothes off, standing on my head, I would have done it. I wouldn't have asked questions," he later added of his experience going to a rehab facility. "I wanted to change, I wanted a new life."
